OUR STORY
My name is Tono and I am the proud owner of Floating Paradise. I was born and raised in Karimunjawa, and my family have been living and working here for generations. I’m very grateful that I can call this beautiful island home. I’m passionate about sharing this place with others, and making sure we can collectively preserve the island’s natural beauty too.
Astrid has been traveling her entire life, always seeking new experiences and connections. Yet it was during this particular journey, after nine months of exploring South-East Asia, that she met Tono in Karimunjawa. Sharing similar dreams and values, they quickly formed a deep connection. It didn’t hurt that Tono lived in a tropical paradise, either!
Together, Astrid and Tono established Floating Paradise, a retreat that embodies their shared vision of peace and harmony with nature. Over the years, they’ve built a life rooted in their love for the island, setting up an educational charity, constructing their own home and food forest, marrying, and welcoming two children into their lives. Their dream is that Floating Paradise not only offers a retreat, but also serves as a gentle reminder of the beauty of living harmoniously with the world around us.
Keep It Green
At Floating, we are committed to preserving the natural beauty of our surroundings and minimising our environmental impact.

Our sustainable practices:
- Floating Paradise runs entirely on solar-powered energy
- We provide complimentary handmade natural body wash and shampoo, and all of our cleaning products are natural too
- We avoid cooking with Palm Oil, choosing island sourced Coconut Oil instead
- We do not sell any plastic drinking bottles; we provide free drinking water and sell reusable steel drinking bottles.
- We consistently use reusable bags, Tupperware and other items to reduce single-use plastic.
- We dispose of our rubbish responsibly, using organic waste for compost
- We work with Trash Hero Karimunjawa to clean-up the local area
- We volunteer passionately towards improving education across Karimunjawa

Kejora Karimunjawa

In 2021, we legally founded a charity called Kejora Karimunjawa, which improves access to quality education on the island.
Kejora has been successfully running the island’s first legal bilingual, nature-based preschool for 3–6-year olds since July 2023, with many children attending on a scholarship. We also provide English lessons for primary school children aged 7–12 and for adults working in tourism.
In addition, we’ve recently built a library and a second classroom to expand our facilities, paving the way for the introduction of primary education, and more educational projects in the near future. As we are entirely non-profit, we depend on donors to succeed in our mission of quality education in Karimunjawa.
We are legalised in the Netherlands too, meaning you can donate directly to our EU bank account:
